The Alice Springs Gliding Club (ASGC) has been a cornerstone of Central Australia’s aviation community since its establishment in 1955.
Operating from the Bond Springs Aerodrome, located approximately 20 kilometers north of Alice Springs, the club has provided enthusiasts with the opportunity to experience silent flight over the vast and picturesque landscapes of the region.
Over the decades, ASGC has maintained a diverse fleet of gliders, catering to both novice and seasoned pilots. One notable aircraft in the club’s history is the SZD-30 Pirat sailplane, registered as VH-GYN. Imported new in 1970, this single-seat glider was initially operated by the Alice Springs Gliding Club before being transferred to other owners across Australia.
The club has also been instrumental in promoting aviation heritage in the region. In 2021, Alice Springs celebrated the centenary of its first-ever flight, with ASGC members like Tom Bird and Jim Thomas, both seasoned pilots, reflecting on the rich aviation history of the area.
Today, the Alice Springs Gliding Club continues to thrive, offering training and air experience flights to those eager to explore the skies of Central Australia. With experienced instructors and a commitment to fostering a love for gliding, the club remains a vital part of the local aviation community.
